Mastering a smoky eye is an essential for any makeup junkie and these 5 stars have all shared their tips and secrets for creating the best smoky eye makeup look. Dramatic and glamorous, these stars often opt for a smoky makeup look on the red carpet and have picked up plenty of great tips for perfecting the look from the professionals over the years. From how to create a good base to smudging techniques, these celebs know what they’re doing when it comes to creating the always stylish look. Here are their top tips!

1.      Alexa Chung

Alexa uses an Eyeko liner and simply smudges it: "When I discovered the Eyeko liner, I was like, 'This is it! This is the one that works!' It's so flattering on everybody! But I can't be bothered with powder shadows that you have to blend, blend, and blend. I'd rather just draw it on and smudge."

2.      Dita Von Teese

Dita always does her foundation after the eye makeup so she can easily clean up any spillages: "I switch up my process a lot. If I’m going to do a smoky eye, I’ll do the eyes first and foundation after. I like a really intense smoky eye, and it’s hard to keep it off the bottom of your face."

3.      Ellen Pompeo

Ellen builds a solid base by applying a good moisturizer first which also helps the product to smudge better: "For a smoky eye, moisturize the area first, so when you line the lid with a pencil it will smudge naturally."

4.      Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth likes her smoky eye to look a little undone: "I love that cool, slightly undone look you get with a dark, smudgy eye. You see that a lot in London, there's a really cool vibe here at the moment where the look is glam, but a little edgier."

5.      Jessica Alba

Jessica pairs hers with a nude lip to bring more attention to the eyes: "Doing more with less is how the pros make it happen, so I also think learning to highlight one feature and keep everything else subtle is important, like drawing attention to a smoky eye and just putting a nude gloss on the lip to finish."
