Wake up to a sexy style

If you’d prefer to hit the snooze button than spend an extra 20 minutes styling your hair in the morning, take a bit of time to prepare your strands before going to bed. Get an extra day out of your blow-dry by lightly tying your lengths into a very high ponytail using a silk scarf. This will prevent the mark you’d otherwise get from an elastic, plus help to encourage extra lift and body at the roots. Alternatively, if you’ve just washed your hair, blast it with a blow-dryer until it’s almost dry and then wrap it into a bun, ensuring the ends are left out. In the morning, unpin and rake your fingers through for an effortlessly glamorous ‘do.

Take care

According to Dr Shiel, there are four main causes of hair damage. The biggest culprit is mechanical damage, from actions like backcombing and brushing, followed closely by the sizzling side effects of heated styling tools. Chemical damage from the use of dyes and straighteners, as well as UV exposure, can also weaken your lengths. ‘There are a few things you can do to minimise the effects, but once it’s done it can’t be repaired – only managed,’ warns Dr Shiel. ‘If your hair is more than 10cm long, use a conditioner every time you wash to help protect it.’ Try Dove Damage Therapy Intensive Repair Conditioner, $6.49.

Then, take additional precautions tailored to your lifestyle. For example, when heading to the beach, apply a leave-in product with a UV shield, such as Moroccanoil Oil Treatment, $52.50.

Or, if you have coloured hair, consider a care range for dyed lengths. When blow-drying or using hot irons, always apply a heat-protecting spray first, like label.m Heat Protection Spray, $34.95, and ensure your hair is completely dry before straightening. ‘Otherwise the moisture will heat up and will begin to steam,’ says Dr Shiel. ‘It can actually blister the surface of strands and further weaken them.’

52% rated regrowth as their greatest colour concern.

Fake a fresh hue

Don’t have time to touch up your roots? It’s time to take a more relaxed approach to styling and avoid severe looks, such as a perfect part or sleek ponytail, notes Bailey. Instead, he suggests disguising the problem by opting for a less structured ‘do, such as a bouncy blow-dry with lots of root lift. ‘If you must have a part, try to make it a bit messier so the regrowth isn’t as obvious,’ he adds. If you can’t make it to the salon, Clairol Nice’n Easy Root Touch-Up, $12.59 (shown here in Light Blonde), is also a great way to stretch out the time between colour appointments.

Saturate your strands

‘If you’re in a dry environment, such as in air conditioning, water will be sucked out from your hair into the air,’ warns Dr Shiel. Give parched lengths a hydrating boost by trading your regular care range for a more moisturising option, and use a rich mask at least once a week. We recommend Sebastian Professional Hydre Moisturizing-Conditioner, $36; Korres Shea Butter & Vitamins Hair Mask, $29.95; and Fekkai Advanced Essential Shea Shampoo, $38.

Boost body

If you have fine strands, always use a lightweight care range, such as John Frieda Luxurious Volume Thickening Shampoo, $15.99; and De Lorenzo Instant Accentu8 Conditioner, $22.95. Keep the conditioner away from your roots and ‘thoroughly rinse your hair to ensure there is no residue left’, says Bailey. Then, get more bounce from your blow-dry by applying a volumising mousse, like Alterna Bamboo Volume Weightless Whipped Mousse, $28.95, and then roughly dry off your lengths with your head tipped upside down. When it’s almost dry, flip your head back up and then ‘blow-dry in the opposite direction to the hair growth for extra height’, instructs Bailey.
