Generations getting along Involving the whole family

Whether grandparents are involved with your family on a daily basis, through occasional visits, or are present in your memories and values, they play a role in raising your child. They’re able to tell your child about past generations, achievements, and the qualities your family share. Events from your own upbringing can be especially fascinating, as your child tries to imagine that you were once her age. When generations get together and tell tales, look at old photographs, and recall the past, it establishes a shared pride and strengthens your child’s sense of security and belonging.

Appreciation

Grandparents may give practical and emotional help such as childcare, parenting advice, and listening to your woes and worries. They may look after your child on a regular basis while you work. These are wonderful opportunities to spend quality time with their grandchildren, but be aware that your appreciation is always welcome. A sense that they are being used as unpaid childcare or taken for granted can build resentment and undermine good family relationships. It may also be important, as the years go by, to check whether grandparents still feel they have the energy and good health to look after their grandchildren. Even the most devoted may eventually have to reduce the input they give.

Well-meant?

Having actively involved grandparents isn’t always clear sailing. They may have strong views about your parenting, or you could feel undermined, for example, if your child is given treats and sweets by grandparents when you’ve said “no.” More often than not, however, grandparents offer well-meant and welcome suggestions, and it is up to you to make your mind up as to whether you take their advice. There may be times, however, when you need to ask them change their approach with your child. This is often more successful than you expect if you are calm, assertive, and clear about what this will achieve and how much it will help you.

Having fun together

A wonderful treasure trove of stories and history, grandparents are an important part of the family.

Generation game

Grandparents can teach your child the tricks that amused you during your younger days, and so pass down good memories.
