Protect Your Hands

Description: Protect Your Hands

Often the most ignored pat of the body – your hands – can develop eczema, a dreadful skin disease that has no cure, easily. Learn more about it, and the precautions needed.

Hand eczema: This is a common skin disease that a lot of people all over the world are suffering from. According to a recent survey, 20 per cent of Indian women suffer from this condition, and some of them have chronic hand eczema. The overwhelming reason is that their hands are frequently in contract with water as they often do the laundry, wash utensils etc., and all this then can lead to hand eczema.

New medicine soon: A doctor will usually prescribe a topical steroid to reduce the incidence of this condition and help in reducing the inflammation. But, this line of treatment is known to fail frequently. There are some new discoveries in this filed and international companies have come out with a new medicine for hand eczema – an oral retinoid called Alitretinoin that can clear the condition in 12 to 24 weeks time. While, this medicine is expected to be launched in India soon, a substitute (though not as effective), lsotretinoin, is currently available here. The only way to prevent this disease is by reducing your skin’s exposure to water, detergents, and soaps.

Skincare, on the Trot

Follow these simple tips while travelling, they will keep your outings fun and safe.

Sunburn solution: Off on a beach holiday? Save your skin from tanning. While Indian skin is prone to tanning, it is fortunately not prone to skin cancer, which is the next stage of a tan. You should opt to sit in the shade, caver up, and always select a sunscreen that has zinc oxide in it. Remember, SPF is not as important as the presence of zinc oxide in the product, as it is this that helps prevent suntan.

Insect and mosquito bites: If you can’t avoid these altogether, applying a cloth that has been soaked in ice-cold water for 5 minutes, is the easiest solution to preventing the bites from getting further inflamed.
