A healthy diet helps to reduce heartburn in late gestation period.

The cause of heartburn

72 out of 100 expectant mothers have heartburn during gestation period, especially in late period. According to experts, the symptom is caused by hormones (affecting the embryo) which operate in mother’s muscles to adapt with embryo growth. To prepare for baby’s birth, pregnant woman often fell uncomfortable in muscle lying in gullet. Thus, the muscular operations between gullet and stomach don’t affect each other much. And gastric juice easily flows backward up to gullet.

Hormone’s movement is one of the reasons for heartburn in early gestation period. It’s wrong to think that heartburn occurs only in last three months. Actually, this symptom can take place at any time during pregnancy and it is commonly seen in last three months.

Baby’s development is also among reasons for heartburn. It pushes compressed gas in the stomach upward while thrusting other things inside stomach and enhances the chance of heartburn.

How to solve?

Heartburn is incurable but there’re some ways to relieve it thanks to proper diet and healthy habits. Here are some notes the pregnant must take:

Have many small meals

Instead of 3 main meals, expectant mothers should have many small meals. She’s They are recommended to chew carefully and slow while eating as eating fast or too much easily leads to heartburn.

Don’t eat before sleep

Avoid consume any food before bedtime. The last meal is 3 hours before sleep. Don’t lie instantly after meal as it creates Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease.

Stay away from disadvantageous foods

These foods include peppermint, tea, fat-rich foods (baked cakes, sweetened cake, and canned/fried/toasted food), wine, caffeine (coffee, chocolate, coco cola), additives (curry, chilli, chili sauce).

Lie on one side

Pregnant woman must lie on one side and not lie instantly after meal. Some expectant mothers get used to eat at night, which will worsen the symptom of heartburn. When sleeping, women have to put their heads on a pillow to keep acid below diaphragm.

Control weight

It’s normal for women to gain weight during pregnancy though if weight rises fast and in great level, it must be considered.

Most of obese people easily get heartburn. In case of exceptionally gaining weight, you have to consult doctor. According to statistics, 35% of overweighed people have heartburn.

Note

Some pregnant women buy medicine to relieve heartburn without doctor’s permission. This can be very dangerous as they don’t know how risky the medicine can be for the pregnant.

It’s not allowed to use medicines that lower the amount of gastric acid without any permission from doctor. Overdosing may decrease the body’s iron consumption, resulting in anemia.
