British designer David Koma has
just been announced as the new artistic director of Mugler, replacing designer Nicola
Formichetti who left the position in April. Virginie Courtin-Clarins, director of development marketing and
communications at Groupe Clarins commented: "We want to write a new page for Mugler, putting
it back on the map in the fashion business. We have the potential to modernize
it and I think the potential is huge. We agreed that we wanted a real
couturier. We feel we need to focus on the product, and that's why we're
starting with the pre-collection."
Speaking on the
appointment himself, an excited Koma revealed that when he was 12-years-old, he
videotaped a television show about Mugler and even at that young age, he was
completely fascinated by the designer and admired his style: "I recorded
it and watched it again and again. I was completely blown away. I think the
style is very distinctive and very powerful." He added that he is
very honoured to take on the role: "I am
deeply honored to take up the role of artistic director at Mugler a house for
which I have the utmost admiration and respect. For me, Mugler is the most
extraordinary fashion house with an undeniably audacious heritage."
Koma will begin work in January
2014 next year, unveiling his first collection in June and also designing a
full catwalk presentation to be shown at Paris Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2015.
