British
accessories designer Lulu Guinness has opened up on her long fashion career,
which began in 1989, commenting that even as a child she was artistic and
always drawing something new. She hated being bored and always found
inspiration from "camp" places for her art work: "I was born
looking for something different, I always liked things very camp - musicals,
movie stars. I'd always loved art - as a child I was constantly sketching and
drawing faces. I was terrified of being bored."
Speaking
on the first celebrity who she witnessed buying one of her pieces, Lula reveals
that it was Madonna who first walked in to her store and picked out one of her
iconic rose basket bags. The whole staff were thrilled by the experience and
they "all screamed" once Madonna left: "Madonna! It was at our
first shop, which opened in 1994, in Ledbury Road, west London. She was wearing
a parka and had a bouncer in tow. She bought a rose basket bag and paid with a
credit card that said M Ciccone. After she left, we all screamed."
Speaking
on the many other famous stars who've worn her pieces, Lulu gushes that many
impressive big names have worn her items and she's always just thrilled to see
people who genuinely like her designs, especially those who are just beginning
their careers: "Over the years, there's been so many: Judi Dench carried
one of my bags to the Oscars, then there's Helena Bonham Carter, Paloma Faith,
Emma Roberts... I'm just happy if they like them, I like contacting the
'beginning' girls, before they get huge; when they're not having loads of
luxury goods delivered."
