Inspired by traditional remedies, the latest lightweight oils work to smooth strands, repair the damage and add a glossy sheen.

From the arid mountains of Morocco to the depths of the Amazon, women across the globe have been pampering their hair with nourishing oils for centuries. But, until recently, these often heavy and pungent tradition treatments had been replaced by the latest haircare technologies, such as lightweight conditioning treatment creams, explains Katya Ivanova, technical project leader for Dove Research & Development. However, over the past two years there has been a renewed interest in oils. The new breed enhances the traditional benefits with the latest innovations, for more effective and user-friendly formulas.

Five Reasons You’ll Love Hair Oils

Aid repair:

For an intensive over-night treatment, Ivanova suggests smoothing a generous amount through dry hair in the evening, before washing it out the following morning.

Shield your strands:

Many formulas contain natural anti-oxidants, like vitamins C and E. You can help to protect against environmental and sun damage by lightly

Coating your lengths with oil before heading outdoors.

Boost shine:

If you have fly-aways, or your ’do is looking dull, “rub a pea-sized amount between your palms and work it through [your lengths], focusing on dry areas”, instructs Ivanova.

Soothe your scalp:

Are you suffering from itchiness? You can help manage irritation by massaging oil into your roots before going to bed, recommends Ivanova.

Style smarter:

Rather than using a leave-in conditioner or styling lotion apply your chosen oil to damp hair before blow-drying. This will not only protect your lengths from the effects of heat styling, but also work to reverse the damage and boost hydration.

Top Tip: If you have lightened locks, opt for an oil that’s free from artificial colourants, as repeated use can deposit pigment and alter your hue.
