Burberry’s chief creative officer
transformed the historic heritage brand from classic to fantastic. His fashion
advice for modern women? Read on
1. Trust your instincts
“It’s so easy to
get distracted by what other people think, do or say. But they don’t live your
life. You need to know what you want and who you are and you have to convey it
to others quickly, so you shine at first impression. You may not have a second
chance.”
2. Find the right colour
“Wearing colour
can be gimmicky – you don’t want to look like a tangerine walking down the
street. It should be sophisticated, making your eyes sparkle and your skintone
warmer. Balance told choices with a neutral, so you never appear overwhelmed.”
3. Follow the 70-30 rule
“When putting
together your wardrobe, remember this equation: 70 per cent should be practical
and 30 per cent frivolous and fun. Sure, you need work pumps and winter boots,
but you also need killer sandals to rev up something as simple as jeans and a
top.”
4. Dressing isn’t about perfection
“This is such an
English point of view, but I love things that are beautifully crafted, yet
slightly askew. When it comes to dressing. I don’t want everything to match or
be from the same designer. Something in your mix should knock even your best
look off a pedestal, like pairing our motorcycle jacket with that little black
dress you’ve had for years. We’ll see you shining through – not just
your outfit.
5. Use technology to try something new
“Luxury is no
longer about exclusivity; shopping online invites everyone in. It might also
give you the guts to try that one strong piece, like a studded jacket or a
bright coat that will ignite your wardrobe, so you see yourself in a whole new
light.”
6. Sexy doesn’t have to scream
“For our scent
Burberry Body [eau de parfum], $120, we blended a sensual English white rose
with darker aromas of musk and amber. The idea is ‘sugar and spice makes
everything nice’. The thing about perfume is, when you take everything off, you
still have the scent.”
What Christopher loves
While the Brit boy adores antique furniture
and rugs “infused with the patina of life”, he’s also keen on art, home
comforts and gardens
*Artwork:
“I’m inspired by the paintings of British artists such as LS Lowry”
*Gardens:
“To be at my home in Yorkshire, surrounded by my roses and hydrangeas, and with
family and friends, is heaven.”
*Kilim rugs:
“I’m smitten with anything that highlights texture and colour, like kilims.”
*Comfort food: “Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. I could eat that everyday.”
