Diane Von
Furstenberg has opened up on her most famous design - the iconic wrap dress
which she first designed in the 1970s - revealing that she used to resent the
dress style because it was the only element of her design career people would
ever talk about.
Diane admits
that she owes everything to the big success of that particular design but she
still went through a period of not liking it because of all of the attention it
received while her other design work went unnoticed. She explained: ''It's very
funny. Even though I owe everything to her - she paid all my bills, my
children's education, my houses - I never appreciated her and sometimes
resented her because I thought, 'Why do people always talk about the wrap dress
when I do so many other things?' But when I was preparing this exhibition I
noticed how the dress has taken on a life of its own and decided it was time to
honour it.''
Speaking on
why she thinks her famous wrap dress has continued going strong after all of
these years, Diane says it's because it has a timeless appeal that simply
flatters women's figures and does exactly what it's supposed to do - be a
versatile dress that is also form-flattering. She stated on why she thinks it
continues to be popular: ''You can't say what has made this dress so enduring -
not everything starts with a logo or a marketing plan. But this exhibition
includes dresses that my mother wore, that I wore, and my daughter and
granddaughters. And that says something I think.''
