J.
Crew's creative director Jenna Lyons has spoken on what she believes makes an
outfit sexy. The designer reveals that she thinks the key to sexiness is about
looking more human and "undone". She adds that when she's giving her
pieces a sexy look, she aims for a natural approach and believes that "an
element of imperfection" is what makes something more relaxed and
therefore sexy. She explained: "There's sexiness in not trying to be sexy.
Sexy for J. Crew is something more natural, not when everything is firing on
all cylinders. There has to be something that’s a bit undone. You can’t have
perfect hair, and clothes, and make-up - you need an element of imperfection to
make you feel like there’s a person behind it all."
Jenna
thinks that this is exactly what is missing from the red carpet, because she
thinks celebrities often go too far to look flawless and it can get rid of that
natural sexy vibe. She understands that celebrities can feel great pressure to
be as close to perfect as possible but she thinks in the end it detracts from
the end result: "I was talking to [Vogue editor] Anna Wintour about this
when we were discussing the red carpets last year, both of us wanted to go and
just mess people up a bit. Everyone was so perfect! Everyone’s tan and primped
and coifed and there’s no ease. I can’t imagine how hard it must be to be in
that level of spotlight and to be photographed from every single angle while
you’re talking and laughing and all these things. You’re so vulnerable!"
