British
designer Victoria Beckham has spoken on getting her start in fashion, revealing
that at the time she began her label, she picked New York Fashion Week to debut
her line because not everyone would attend the show if it was in London. She
therefore had to ditch presenting in her home country in favor of NYC, but
counts herself lucky to have landed the timetable spot she has at the big
fashion event: “I lived in Los Angeles for a long time. When I first started
doing all of my shows, not all of the key press and all of the key buyers went
to London Fashion Week. Everybody went to New York. I am very lucky to have the
time slot that I do, with regards to my show. It’s what we know and it works
for us. I am very superstitious as well and I have no intention of moving from
New York.”
Victoria
is in the process of opening her first store in London and she says the whole
experience is exciting because it adds a whole new element for the customer and
she'll be able to present the brand exactly how she wants it to be seen: “This
is very exciting for me and my whole team. This is the first time that my
customers will be able to feel and see my brand through my eyes. We launched a
website about 18 months ago now, which has been hugely successful. What is
great about online and the store in London is I decide what will be sold in the
shops."
The
designer is also thrilled to be able to handpick what will be available in the
store specifically and says she's investing in stocking the statement designs
from her shows: "This is my vision and these are my favourite pieces that,
as a customer, I would like to buy. I am going to buy more into the fashion
pieces that are in all of the shows. So I think it will definitely be a
different experience to when a customer would normally go shopping for ready-to-wear.”
