Italian designer Miuccia Prada has opened up on the way she
approaches design. She believes people don't see her as being trend-orientated
when she believes she is. She comments that she is always looking to the future
when creating her pieces and loves to be "the first one" when it
comes to creating something people want: "I often have the feeling
that young people are more free than those with the complex to be modern. And
what does it mean, modern? There is a key point that people keep
underestimating about me: I am a very trendy person! I mean, my job is more
complicated, but basically I am interested in what's next. Since I was 16, I
wanted to be the first one. I wanted to be different."
Speaking on preparing for Milan Fashion Week each season, she
says things can quickly spiral out of control and get dramatic, because often
she leaves key decisions to the last minute and is known to also change her
mind rapidly: "It's really a drama. This is not very nice maybe, but all
of the decisions are because we are late. And mainly it's me. If I can postpone
and postpone... Sometimes you need unconsciously to let your mind consider an
idea."
Design director Fabio Zambernardi has joked that Miuccia often
wonders how they end up with such a great end result: "After all these
conversations, the day before the show she'll say, 'Oh, it's so beautiful, I'm
so happy, but what's it all about? Almost like a child asking, 'How did we get
to this point?' She needs a recap of her thoughts. Me too!"
