She
may be most famous for her incredible print work, but fashion
designer Mary Katrantzou continues to show her range as a designer - she
is set to collaborate with Adidas Originals for a new collection, and she has
also just designed her first wedding dress. Katrantzou was enlisted
by Carolina Gonzalez-Bunster, the founder of the Walkabout Foundation, to
design her dress for her big day. Mary created a round halterneck dress with a
layered ruffle hemline consisting of countless layers of fabric. Opening up on
the design process, the designer commented that they wanted the piece to be
modern and fresh: ''We didn't want to do a classic strapless dress; we
wanted it to be modern and original. One thing she really wanted
was lots of fabric and movement, so the focus was on the skirt and designing it
in a way that it appears effortless.''
Mary
adds that working with a bride to create her dream dress is an intimate
experience and you both need to be on the same page for it to work: ''It's
a very intimate experience and a time consuming one, too, so it has to feel
right.'' The designer was even invited to her wedding and was amazed by
the entire experience: ''She was so open and positive and even though I
had never done a wedding dress before, she really trusted me to create the
perfect dress for her. I flew to the Dominican Republic for the
wedding and when it all came together I felt so humbled to be part of such a
special day in her life. It felt like I'd known her for years.''
