In my role I get the opportunity to be
aware of the trends and see the key pieces early on. That doesn’t mean to say
I’m going to buy into all of them. I like things to be functional but interesting.
I often dress round my accessories – the most recent thing I bought was
Christopher Kane’s brocade flats, which I wanted as soon as I saw them on the
catwalk. I’ve spent the month’s in-between trying to work out a look around
them. I live that fact they are so ‘fashion’ and directional, yet totally
sensible. I’m very particular about what I buy: I try to restrain impulse
purchases and think hard before committing.
Five tips for practical buyers
- Flats don’t have to be dull. I always
look for something with a flourish a detail that makes a practical piece
extraordinary.
- Avoid high-street designer copies and opt
for collaborations and limited editions instead.
- Don’t think only high-end brands are
fashion-forward: Topshop and ASOS excel.
- There’s a fine line between innovator and
fashion victim. Look for interesting colour, fabric or detailing, rather
than extreme shapes.
- A monochrome palette means you can get
away with extreme-print accessories.
