33
per cent of women say that shopping for skincare products
Here’s a skincare fact that might surprise
you: 33 per cent of women say that shopping for skincare products is more
confusing than doing their tax return, according to a US survey by Olay. Although the process might be baffling for some, finding products that target
anti-ageing while catering to your specific skin issues can mean the difference
between a forever-youthful glow and premature ageing.
Here, we go back to basics and discover the
ideal anti-ageing regimen for each skin type.
(Skin type) Combination
The
analysis
You can thank factors like increased stress
level, harsh UV rays and ever-present pollution for about 70 per cent of women
experiencing combination skin. A blend of oily, normal and dry skin types,
combination complexions can be identified by an oilier T-zone (forehead, nose
and chin) with more prominent pores, and dry on sensitive cheeks.
The
regimen
Cleanse: Look for a gentle, non-foaming
cleanser to use on your face. Then spot treat your oily T-zone by applying a
toner with exfoliating ingredients such as glycolic, lactic or salicylic acid
to help mop up excess oil and increase cell turnover. (AM + PM)
Treat: For oily areas, try a gentle at-home
peel to decrease oil production, unclog pores and refresh your complexion.
If you’re prone to breakouts, try a vitamin
A-based product like Retin-A or retinol, or if that causes irritation, look for
a spot corrector instead. Oily areas age more slowly than the rest, so pay
special attention to your dry zones by using products packed with collagen and
peptides to plump and hydrate. (PM)
Moisturize: Combination skin requires
lightweight hydrating products that won’t clog your pores. Choose a breathable
day cream or serum, and if your cheeks are still feeling tight, layer on a
heavy-duty night cream before going to bed. “For women who have an oily T-zone,
I suggest applying a serum to the whole face and then moisturizing only the dry
areas,” says Katherine Armour, consulting dermatologist to L’Oréal Paris. For
the best anti-ageing results, look out for ingredients such as peptides, growth
factors, stem cells and collagen. (AM + PM)

(Skin type) Normal
The
analysis
Normal skin is the most straightforward to
treat effectively. Your complexion is fairly even and you don’t have areas of
dryness or excess oil, but you’re not immune to ageing either. So, treating
fine lines, wrinkles and sagging is top of mind for you.
The
regimen
Cleanse: Normal skin types really do have
the pick of the bunch when it comes to cleansing formulas. Choose a product
that doesn’t make your skin feel tight and steer clear of cleansers for
excessive oiliness or dryness. (AM + PM)
Treat: Your mission is to prevent ageing,
or slow the process if it’s already under way. So, apply a serum under your
moisturizer to help eliminate fine lines, treat sagging and even out your
complexion. Unfortunately, there isn’t a one-product-fixes-all solution yet, so
layering a number of serums that contain all the anti-ageing artillery you need
(vitamins A and C, antioxidants, peptides, collagen and stem cells) might be
best option for you. (PM)
Moisturize: Look for multi-tasking
moisturizers that promote cell turnover and increase collagen production
without causing irritation, as well as contain hyaluronic acid for added
plumping and firmness. (AM + PM)
