Singer
and style icon Janelle Monae has weighed in on stars who dress in barely-there
ensembles to grab attention. She believes that in the music industry, most of
the female performers feel as though they have to wear skimpy clothing and she
believes they're trying to "sell sex" as well as their music. Janelle
is famous for wearing full masculine-inspired suits and she says she doesn't
want to be told how to dress, she wants full control: ''There are no
women who perform fully clothed - still to this day there aren't. To me, that
was a problem, to say 'If you want to be in the music industry, you need to be
able to sell sex' ... I want to be in control of my body. I don't
ever want a man or a woman to tell me to dress that way. I think it’s up to
me.''
The
stylish musician adds that she doesn't like it when her outfit choices eat up
her time. Although she may be known for always being dressed in unique
ensembles, she says she gets annoyed if it takes her longer than 2 minutes to
put together an outfit because she sees it as a waste of time. She instead only
wants to be focused on work: ''If I have to think about my outfit for
longer than, like, two minutes, I've wasted my time. Who wants to think
about, 'What am I going to wear to this performance?' I need to be focusing on
creating, changing the world.''
