To ensure panda eyes and perspiration don’t ruin your holiday snaps, we asked top make-up artists for the essentials they won’t leave the country without

1.    Tinted moisturiser

You can’t beat a tinted moisturizer for giving just the right amount of coverage to already sun kissed skin. ‘I always switch my foundation to a tinted moisturizer with a good SPF when the seasons change,’ says make-up artist Lisa Valencia. ‘Laura Mercier Oil Free Tinted Moisturizer, $49.5, is a favourite because it evens skin tone, adds radiance and has an SPF20, too. Keep it in the fridge and you’ll cool your complexion every time you apply.’

2.    Shimmering bronzer

Though you might usually avoid shimmery bronzers because of the not-too-discreet glittery finish, it’s worth giving them a second chance, says Lisa. ‘The latest bronzers are great for evening – they add a warmth to your face, boost an existing tan and the shimmer gives dewy skin a natural glow.’ YSL Terre Saharienne Collector Bronzing Powder, $58.5, contains just the right amount of shimmer to create amazing iridescence. ‘Brush it along your collarbones, too – the highlight is super-flattering,’ adds Lisa.

3.    Waterproof mascara

‘Messy mascara and panda eyes are a nightmare when shooting on location,’ says international make-up artist Chase Aston. ‘To prevent it, I always tint the models, lashes and brows to get the definition I need, then pump up the volume afterwards by combing through a waterproof mascara.’ Try Max Factor Waterproof False Lash Effect Mascara, $16.5 – a stay-put version of the best-selling mascara. ‘Just remember to only apply it to your top lashes, as it’s your bottom lashes that tend to smudge around your eyes after a swim,’ says make-up artist Caroline Barnes.

4.    Lip balm with SPF15

Every make-up artist we asked had a lip balm with added SPF protection in their summer kit to prevent burning (your lips are much more delicate than the rest of your face, so burn far more easily). ‘When I want to use bold lip colour on location, I always smooth a layer of protective lip balm all over the lips first,’ says Chase. ‘Not only does it protect the lips, but it also dilutes the bright hue into a sheer lip glaze.’ Not planning on a bright pop of colour? We love the subtly tinted Lanolips Lip Ointment with Colour SPF15, $12.5, for its non-sticky textures, hydrating ingredients and natural shades.

5.    Facial spiritz

‘I always keep a cooling water spray on my desk, in my handbag and in the fridge at home when it’s super-hot,’ says Zest’s beauty editor, Leyla Tabalsert. ‘A quick spritz doesn’t just cool me down, I’m sure the extra shoot of hydration throughout the day keeps my skin from becoming too dry, too.’ Look for one with added skincare benefits. L’Occitane Angelica Hydration Face Mist, $22.5, keeps your make-up feeling fresh, plus the angelica essential oil it contains has amazing hydrating properties, too.

6.    Crream blush

‘Cream textures are fresher and lighter than powder blushers and work much better with the heat on your skin than powders,’ says Chase. ‘They almost melt a little to give an effect that looks much more real.’ Opt for coral and peach shades rather than pinks, though. ‘After along day in the sun, your skin will be more flushed than usual and a pink blush will only highlight any redness,’ warns Caroline. ‘A coral or peach shade will be more flattering and, best of all, suits all skin tones.’ The Body Shop Lip & Cheek Dome in Coral, $15, gives a sheer wash of colour and the perfect dewy finish.

7.    Bright lipstick

Keep make-up simple and instead of going all out on both your eyes and lips, focus a pop of colour where it’s quick and easy to apply – on the lips. ‘Brighter shades look amazing against sunkissed skin, and are far more wearable, too,’ says make-up artist Cassie Lomas. Rather than bulking out your make-up bag with a bunch of lipsticks, choose a compact such as New Bourjois Colorissimo Lip Palette, $13.5 (available in four colourways), which contains three different shades to take you through from day to night – and the creamy textures last longer than most. Paint on, blot with tissue and apply again for added staying power.
