Soft, smooth, plump. The trifecta of
smoochable lips is perfectly achievable - even in the dead of winter, when the
elements are conspiring against you. Try these three simple steps to pout
perfection.
Prep
To create a smooth canvas for colour,
slather lips with a generous layer of a hydrating balm and then buff away rough
patches with a moist washcloth or sloughing treatment like [1] Lush Lip Scrub
in Mint Julips ($9.95; lush.com.au). "Use gentle, circular strokes,"
says dermatologist Dr Doris Day, "and don't skip the pre-moisturising step
or already dehydrated skin could peel and bleed." If you're extra-dry,
apply another coat of balm - preferably one without petroleum, which can leave lips
too slippery for colour to adhere to. Try [2] Jane Iredale Lip Drink Lip Balm
($23; margifox.com.au).
Kiss
& Make-up
Prime
After waiting a few minutes for the balm to
sink in, slick on a lip primer, a neutral-toned base designed to keep colour
from feathering or fading. "Most contain waxes that help pigment stay put
for hours," says make-up artist Marcus Monson. We like [3] E.L.F. Studio
Lip Primer & Plumper ($9.99; Elfcosmetics.com.au).
Perfect
In addition to keeping your lipstick in
place, lip liner can create the illusion of a more symmetrical or voluptuous
mouth, says celebrity make-up artist Fiona Stiles, who advises using a pencil
that can be sharpened. "Twist-up versions can dull after a few uses and
won't allow for precise application." If you're already endowed in that
area, choose a coloured pencil in a smudge-proof formula that complements your
lipstick shade. Try [4] Rimmell 1000 Kisses Stay On Lip Liner ($8.50;
Priceline). Outline your lips exactly, and then fill them in a bit so there's
no line of demarcation. To extend your lip lines, use a pencil that matches
your natural lip colour to trace just outside of your pout. A universally
flattering one: [5] CoverGirl Lip Perfection Lipliner in Seduce ($11.95;
pharmacies). Next, apply your lip colour straight from the tube or with a
brush; blot with a tissue and repeat. "Two coats will make the shade
appear more even," says Monson. To add shine or enhance fullness, dab some
clear gloss in the centre of your kisser. Now pucker up!
