Lanvin's
head designer Alber Elbaz has spoken on designing. He explains that he believes
perfection is only reachable in death because he sees being perfect as
"the end" and he often even tries to avoid having everything
completely flawless because he learns from mistakes: "For me, perfection
is the end: you always talk about people being perfect when they're dead. When
I went to Saint Laurent, everything was so perfect, all I wanted was to make it
imperfect. I put the wrong girls with the wrong shoes, the wrong looks, and the
wrong styling. I don't believe in perfection; I believe in making
mistakes."
The
designer admits that he thinks social media has made life too instant and
thinks people are always in a rush, especially to be the first to share
something new. Alber explained that it once ruined a show and he thinks it can
be a "tragedy" when information spreads too quickly: "I once
said, not everything in life is instant [like coffee]. Everyone is in such a
rush. We always do a little rehearsal before our show in Paris, but last time
everything was on Instagram five minutes later. It was the boyfriend of one of
the models [who blew our cover]. We asked him why. But he didn't understand the
tragedy of it. It's not like we're the FBI or the CIA, but there are things
that deserve time. It's the same when people sit in a restaurant and post a
picture of their food before they eat."
