Hair goes back to the 50s with girlish
twists, preppy plaits and rockabilly quiffs, but this time around it’s all a
bit messed up
Laid – back braid
Spotted at Antonio Marras, Micheal Kors and
Valentino, braids are back in a big way. What gives this ubiquitous summer
style a cool update is the ‘floppy, soft texture and ruffled strays hanging
around the face’, says the hair hero of this school Eugene Souleiman, global
creative director at Wella Professionals. ‘Throwing in a side parting makes it
pretty and flirtatious, too’.
Easy does it
You need volume but also softness, so
spritz through Wella Professionals SP Volumize Leave-In Conditioner, $22.
Souleiman says it’s the perfect choice if you hate the way product feels in
your hair. ‘Plait loosely to one side, lifting it up as you go for the loose
appearance’, he says.

Careless wisps
‘There’s a raw element to this look’, says
Souleiman. ‘Hair is no longer combed and uptight like it was in the 50s’.
Perfect for days when your hair just doesn’t want to work with you.
Easy does it
Fluff up hair by rubbing hands over the top
and around the hairline. Hair needs to be super-soft so a nourishing treatment
is essential. Choose Herbal Essences Tousle Me Softly Intensive Mask, $6.

Cute quaff
Souleiman’s hair creation at Haider
Ackerman was inspired by the 50s rockabilly quaff, which gives a perfect hit of
retro Americana. ‘Think a man’s haircut-height at the top and tight at the
sides’, he says.
Easy does it
Start with a spritz of thickening spray at
the roots to add volume and grip. Backcomb, twist into a French pleat, leaving
a medium-sized front section free, and secure with pins. Build up the front
section with Sebastian Professional Microweb Fiber, $22, for a mallable base
and lay it over the head. Use a super strong –hold hairspray like Wella
Professionals Super Set, $19, to fix in place.

Hi, honey
Add luxurious colour to shiny bouncy waves
and you have hair that’s as sexy as a chrome-trimmed hot rod. But keep it
minimal with strategically placed honey tones. ‘Over-coloured hair can be
ageing’, says colourist to the stars Josh Wood. ‘A natural approach looks
expensive and is a direct departure from last year’s dip-dyeing’.
Easy does it
Blow-drying with a large round brush will
give hair shine, or you can get the look with tongs – twist the hair forward
for more flattering shapes around the face and use a serum like Pantene Pro-V
Normal to Thick Split End Serum, $7, at the ends. The Windle & Moodie
Ceramic Marcel Curling Iron, $180, gives good waves.

On a roll
‘Retro hairsyles are no longer
in-your-face, they are slightly disguised now’, says Souleiman, who gave this
prim low-slung ponytail a nod to the 50s with a teeny hair roll on the side and
a youthful windswept finish.
Easy does it
Prep with Toni & Guy Label.M
Resurrection Style Dust, $15, to give hair guts. Blow-dry, then straighten with
hair into a side parting. On the opposite side make another side parting, then
twist that section to the back of your head, pin in place and secure hair back
into a pony at the nape of the neck.
