Don’t shy away from vivid blues and greens
for eyes. If you can brave a bright strappy sandal for a party, you’ve got it
in you to ditch that dull taupe eye shadow for something more exciting and eye
opening! Color over the eyes also detracts from pesky things like bags, crow’s
feet and under-eye circles. “And why can’t we grown-ups be on trend for a
change?” Carol says.

Brush some eye-catching color across lids.
Carol used [1] Mac eye shadow in Bitter Lime Green, $18, for the lid to the
brow and [2] Mac eye shadow in Atlantic Blue, $18 (0800 054 2999;
maccosmetics.co.uk), near the lashes.

Carol applied [3] D&G The Eyeliner
Crayon Intense No 21, $25 at Harrods (020 7730 1234; harrods.com), in a vivid
blue along the lower inner rim of the eye. We also recommend Giorgio Armani
Eyes to Kill No 22, $39, a pretty iridescent blue, By Terry Ombre Blackstar
Color Fix Cream Eyeshadow in Fizzy Jade, $40 (020 8740 2085; spacenk.co.uk),
and Bare Minerals Ready Duo in The Showstopper, $39 (bareminerals.co.uk) –
solid mineral powders with antioxidants and other skin-revitalizing benefits.
Bold red lips for every age
“Regardless of your age or skin tone, a
clean face and red lips are a modernizing look,” says Carol. ‘A touch of
light-reflecting concealer to brighten the mouth area and blur lines, partnered
with a lively red lip color is instant fabulousness.’ And reds can be easily
personalized to make a loud, bold statement or a softer whisper of color. For
this look, Carol used Mac lipstick in Ruby Woo, $20 (as before), a cult red
with a blue undertone. If sophisticated pinks and berries are your thing. Carol
recommends Armani lipstick, from $37 at Selfridges (or

How
to make red work for you
Apply straight from the bullet (it will
soon mould to the shape of your lips) then soften the edge using your finger or
a lip brush. That way, you get a very intense color in the middle and a soften
edge that mimics the way lips naturally fade in color at the outer edge.
Lady
in red: a sexy choice for any age
Apply lipstick, leave for a few minutes to
allow the pigment to take, then blot to create a long-lasting stain.
Economical, too, because it means you can dust down barely used bright red and
pink lipsticks you weren’t brave enough to wear. The counters are awash with
fresh new shades for summer – best ones include: [4] Revlon Just Bitten
Kissable Balm Stains, $12 each; [5] Clarins Crystal Balms, $25, and Maybelline
Color Sensational Popsticks, $11.
Trick of the light
Most of us start to lose our inherent
radiance in our 30s (sigh), but you can add some back. We had a serious gold
rush when we saw the [1] Mac Pigment, $25 (as before), that Carol used here,
which she applied only to the outer corner of the eyelids for a fabulously
glamorous look: ‘The particles are bigger, which adds more drama – and helps them
stay put!’
Create
youthful sparkle with light-reflecting make-up
For a slightly subtler effect that works
for both day and night, we love [2] Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Shadow, seen
here in Copper, $27 (0870 034 2566; bobbibrown.co.uk). sweep it on for a veil
of color or build it up for an intense look.
Celebs have their favorite photographers
‘light them’ for photo shoots – the next best thing to a cosmetic surgeon. But
thanks to dazzling advances in technology, now make-up can add a fabulous
luminosity to the skin. A shining example is YSL Le Teint Touche Éclat
Illuminating Foundation, $42 (yslbeaty.co.uk), which combines the famous Touche
Éclat light particles with its latest foundation for beautiful, subtle
coverage.
According to Carol, the right application
is as important as the right product. “Apply the product sparingly, and only
where you need it – especially a foundation. If you apply too much, even a good
product can flood into lines and overload skin, and even a 20-something will
look older,” she says.
