Bring old-fashioned arts back into your urban lifestyle. Getting your hands dirty has never
been more fun!
Remember the time your
grandmother made your birthday dress from scratch? Makeovers, the home and fashion kind, have again become the ‘it’ thing to do. People are bringing out
their knitting needles and dusting
off their tools. Not only are you adding your personality to the objects you use, but you are doing your planet a great
service, too, by recycling what already
exists. Sales on your mind? Buy basic and classic products at a steal that
you can modify for the next season. We asked a bunch of creative professionals to help us with fun DIY ideas that
we road-tested for you.
Wild wild vest bag
By Anuj Sharma, designer
You will need
A tank top, poker chips/ buttons, rubber bands
How to
1.
Place a chip at the edge of the tank top’s hem.
2.
Wrap the chip with the top and secure with a rubber
band.
3.
Repeat the wrap-and-tie process until you reach the
other edge of the hem. The rubber bands
and the chips seal the hem completely, making it safe to use as a bag! Pick tank tops in colours and prints; grocery shopping gets a recycled, kooky twist!

Galaxy Print Tee
By Nikhil D, Marie Claire staffer
You will need
White T-shirt, colour fast dyes, dye fixer, bleaching powder, white paint, a bucket, rubber bands
How to
- Pour your preferred
dye colour and the dye fixer into a bucket of hot water.
- Pick random parts
of the T shirt and tie rubber bands on the area, then dip the
T-shirt into the bucket. (You
can use your creativity to place different parts of the T-shirt in different colour dyes).
- After 30 mins of
keeping it dipped in the dye, take out the T-shirt from the bucket and
place it flat on the ground.
Using a brush, splatter the bleaching powder all over the T-shirt. Use
another brush to scatter drops
of white paint. (You can use a
thin brush to turn a drop of white paint into a tiny star, every now and then.)
- The T-shirt is
ready once you dry it off; wash once more to make sure the dye holds and the excess bleach is removed.
Here’s your ‘starry-night’ tee!
