Breast milk is the first and the best gift you give your
baby. Proper latching - the act of your baby suckling the nipple and areola for
feeding – is very important. Improper latching prevents your baby from nursing
and makes your nipples hurt and cracked.
Instructions
1. Take off and
change your baby’s diaper. She must be fully awake and comfortable before
nursing.

2. Hold her head by
one hand and your breast by the other. Flatten the areola area by squeezing
your breast to fit in her mouth. Stroke her cheeks gently by your thumb to make
her mouth open.
3. Put your breast
quickly to her mouth. Make sure her lips are flared out (like a fish) and
encompassing your nipple and areola. Check if your baby’s nose and chin are
touching your breast, which helps you be sure your proper breast area is in her
mouth.

4. Be sure she is
nursing, not just nuzzling by hearing unless there was a clicking noise from
her mouth. Take her out and do it again until she is really nursing.
Tips and warnings
·
Your baby should have almost the areola area in her mouth. It
helps compress your milk sinuses and cause the milk to release and flow correctly
to your nipple.
·
A correct latch-on is like a strong pull but a pinch. A biting
sensation is the sign of a poor latch-on.
