New
York based designer Zac Posen believes designers need to stop taking
inspiration from street style because it has become "homogenised" in
recent years. He thinks it's more important for designers to look for new ways
to be creative and become more imaginative than simply taking note of what's
popular on the street or reinterpreting street trends. Posen thinks if
designers did take this approach, it might have a knock-on effect and make
street style even more interesting: “I’m a New Yorker and growing up in New
York people were really expressive with their style and with their beliefs, and
I want to see more of that in New York. I feel like street style has become a
little bit homogenised and I think if maybe designers stop being inspired by
street style and start looking within their own soul and imagination, then the
street might elevate as well.”
Posen
recently unveiled his label's new Spring/Summer 2015 collection at New York
Fashion Week. The designer explained he wanted to design a minimal, clean silhouette
that is simple and flattering. He commented on his approach to the new pieces:
“Spring for us this season is clean, sculptural, very glamorous, no ruffles,
great clothing for great women. We focused on red white and black and that’s to
appreciate the cut and the form of the clothing.”
The
designer used model Coco Rocha in his show and explains that he has always had
a close bond with her since the beginning of her career: “Coco’s first season
on the runway she was in my show. I fell in love with her and then I offered to
make her wedding dress and I got to meet her lovely husband. You know we’re big
collaborators, and really close friends. She has built her own brand for
herself and I’m really proud of her and I’ve tried to help guide her over the years
on that but she’s a superstar.”
