  1. Walk through the Englischer Garten

From the Haus der Kunst, walk north through the beautiful section of the park that was landscaped 200 years ago. At Kleinhesseloher See, a footbridge takes you over a highway into the newer section of the park and to your final destination, the utterly charming Zum Aumeister beer garden.

    • 1.5–2 hrs

    • Zum Aumeister, Sondermeierstr. 1

    • 089 32 52 24

  2. Hiking along the Isar

Departing from the Deutsches Museum, walk south upriver along the right bank of the Isar. At the halfway mark, it’s worthwhile taking a short detour to see the rose garden . This walk goes all the way to the meadows in Thalkirchen, where you can also stop to visit the Tierpark Hellabrunn, a zoo.

    • 1.5–2 hrs

    • Mangostin Asia, Maria-Einsiedel-Str. 2

    • 089 723 20 31

  3. A Walk in Westpark

Set off at the eastern end of Westpark at the corner of Hansastr and Baumgartnerstr. Walk west through the park grounds until you reach a footbridge, which links the eastern and western sections. Special features of the park include artful Asian garden landscapes and a restaurant (with beer garden) next to a rose garden.

    • 1–1.5 hrs

    • Gasthaus am Rosengarten, Westendstr. 305

    • 089 57 86 93 00

  4. Walk through Nymphenburg Park

Before setting off from Schloss Nymphenburg, take your bearings from one of the many park plans posted near the entrance. An attractive route is a pavilion circuit – Pagodenburg, the cascades, the Temple of Apollo, Badenburg, and Amalienburg – and back to the palace. Round out your walk with a visit to the Museum Mensch und Natur or the Botanical Gardens.

    • 1–1.5 hrs

    • Schlosscafé im Palmenhaus, Schloss entrance 43

    • 089 17 53 09

    Nymphenburg Park
  5. Hiking on the Ilkahöhe

Starting at the S-Bahn (S6) station in Tutzing, the trail to the Ilkahöhe is clearly marked by white triangles and climbs up a total elevation of some 150 m (500 ft), in part on narrow forest paths. The view from the top of the hill is magnificent. On clear days, you can see the entire chain of the Bavarian Alps.

    • 1.5–2 hrs

    • Forsthaus Ilkahöhe, Tutzing

    • 08158 82 42

  6. Cycling Tour to Freising

From the Aumeister beer garden in the Englischer Garten, follow the Isar cycling path in the direction of Freising, about 40 km (25 miles) away. At the bridge across the Isar in Freising, turn left toward Weihenstephan. This former Benedictine monastery is the oldest brewery in the world. Return to Munich by S-Bahn (S1), which departs from Freising station, 2 km (1 mile) away.

    • 2.5–3 hrs

    • Bräustüberl Weihenstephan

    • 08161 130 04

  7. Cycling Tour to Schloss Schleißheim

Some 200 m (650 ft) to the right of the S-Bahn train station in Milbertshofen, turn north at the small park and follow the cycling path, in part on an old streetcar track, in the direction of Oberschleißheim, where you can take a brief cultural break by visiting the Flugwerft Schleißheim and the Neues Schloß. Continue along the Schleißheim canal to Garching-Hochbrück and return by U-Bahn (U6).

    • 2–2.5 hrs

    • Schlosswirtschaft Oberschleißheim, Maximilianhof 2

    • 089 315 15 55

  8. Cycling Tour: Olympiapark to Schloss Blutenburg

From Olympiapark, cycle along Nymphenburg canal to the palace and then continue west along the southern park wall (cycling is prohibited in the park) until you reach an underpass. The rest of the cycling path to Schloss Blutenburg, home to the International Youth Library, is clearly marked.

    • 1.5–2 hrs

    • Schlossschänke Blutenburg

    • 089 811 98 08

  9. Cycling Tour: Along the Isar to Schäftlarn Monastery

From the Deutsches Museum, follow the Isar cycling path in a southerly direction. Take a break at Grünwald to visit the fortress and continue on to Schäftlarn monastery. A note of caution – there are several bumpy stretches through forests and some hilly sections. Returning to Munich is easy – take the S-Bahn (S7) from Hohenschäftlarn station, 3 km (2 miles) away.

    • 2–2.5 hrs

    • Klosterbräustüberl Schäftlarn, Ebenhausen

    • 08178 36 94

  10. Cycling Tour: Along the Würm to Lake Starnberg

Departing from Pasing S-Bahn station, the route begins with a short stretch along busy roads to the clearly marked Würm river cycling path. Follow the river south past Gauting to Leutstetten, where you can take a break in the beautiful castle restaurant with beer garden. The tour continues up a short incline past Mühltal station, past a golf course, and on to Starnberg. Again, there is an easy route home by S-Bahn (S6) from Starnberg station.

    • 2–2.5 hrs

    • Undosa Seerestaurant, Starnberg

    • 08151 99 89 30
