Montage Deer Valley
Park City, Utah
“Our connection with nature is primal,”
says Anne Bramham, a leading educator of Spa Montage’s Surrender program.”
Composed of the same substances as the dust of the earth and the stars in the
sky, we are infinitely bound to the elemental forces that drive our physical,
emotional, and spiritual being. Earth is our home, and it is our common
mother.”

Montage Deer Valley is a chic mountain
resort located in the Empire Canyon region. Nestled 7,500 feet above sea level,
it is located in an almost supernatural alpine setting. Inspired by the
majestic landscape, Bramham drew upon the natural resources of the area to
create some of the most powerful indigenous treatments we’ve experienced. The
aspen tree, milk thistle, chamonmile, elderberry, yarrow, and white sego lily
are just some of the region’s plants that play an important ingredient role in
the spa treatments. The Surrender program is an extremely personalized
three-day retreat that begins before you arrive with a personal lifestyle
profile. Integral to the program is the determination of one’s constitution,
based on three distinct types: ectomorph, endomorph, and mesomorph. Treatments,
fitness, and cuisine are created around your specific body type, and hiking in
the magical mountainside is highly encouraged.
Mohonk Mountain House
New Paltz, New York
You’ll find more than 40 theme programs throughout the year a
Monhonk, and rates include meals and most activities.
In 1869, an enterprising man by the name of
Albert Smiley purchased a lake, a tavern, and 300 acres of untouched terrain.
Smiley’s mission was to create a resort that provided “opportunities for
recreation and renewal of body, mind, and spirit in a beautiful and natural
setting.” Over the years, additional land was purchased, offering a spectacular
natural respite for guests. Today, Mohonk Mountain House is set amid 40,000
acres of preserve land in the Shawangunk Mountains – and to this day is owned
and operated by the Smiley family. On its 125th anniversary, the
resort received an award from the United Nations Environment Program,
recognizing the family and Mohonk “for generations of dedicated leadership and
commitment to the protection and enhancement of the environment and for their
inestimable contribution to the cause of peace, justice, and sustainable human
development.”
Mohonk continues to be a haven for healing
and a safe touchstone. It’s one of the best places to relax, renew, and come
away with new tools for a better you. There are a number of seasonal outdoors
activities, as well as a state-of-the-art spa that offers nature-inspired
treatments using indigenous materials. A new spa series called “Modern Living”
addresses the burgeoning technologies and hectic pace of our lifestyles and
offers new solutions for daily stress through innovative treatments such as
“Texting Tension Tamer” and “Breathe Deep and Be Well.” If that isn’t enough to
relax you, there are 600-plus rocking chairs set on porches with contemplative
views. Nina Smiley, PhD, marketing director, wife of Albert Smiley III, and
co-author of The Three-Minute Meditator, leads some of the most inspirational
workshops that give guest the necessary tools for healing and empowerment.
She’s the expert behind details such as the “meditation extension,” where
guests, in the privacy of their own room, may make a quick phone call to hear a
short recording of guided mindfulness to help clear their heads. You’ll find
more than 40 theme programs throughout the year a Monhonk, and rates include
meals and most activities.

Opened this past January, One Wellness
offers one of the most unique spar concepts we’ve come across: energy
management. Owner and physiotherapist, Hugh Simon, worked closely with Amy
MacDonald of Under a Tree Consulting to develop a program that centers on
improving one’s energy to achieve optimal well-being. The signature experience,
Pathways to Engagement, takes customization to a new level, allowing guests to
choose a pathway that most represents their current need, be that sleep,
release, clearing, transition, or joy, Once a pathway is chosen, one is led
through a process that includes a needs assessment, specialized aromatherapy,
custom breathwork, guided imagery, and massage and bodywork. The traditional
passive spa experience becomes an integrative and active one here.
Staying actives at this place isn’t an
issue at all. One Wellness is the official spa of the Solara Resort that’s
located at the base of the Canadian Rocky Mountains – one of the greatest
outdoor playgrounds around. Hiking, mountain biking, fishing, kayaking, and a
plethora of guided adventures abound.
