The
Poetry Of Yoga (Vol. 1)
Two years ago, the Washington, D.C., poet,
yoga teacher, and community organizer HawaHinvited yoga enthusiasts from around
the world to submit poems for his debut book, The Poetry of yoga: A
contemporary Anthology. Volume 1 features verses contributed by more than 125
yogis from 16 countries, including both everyday practitioners and leading teachers
such as Sharon Gannon, Rod Stryker, Lilias Folan, and Erich Schiffmann. (Volume
2 is scheduled for release in December.)
The
Poetry of Yoga A Contemporary
Although readers may be tempted to search
for entries from their favorite teachers, some of the most insightful poems
come from relatively unknown yogis like Linda Lee and Carly Sachs. Perfect for
solitary contemplation, this anthology is full of yogic wisdom distilled into
poetic form. Serious and at times lighthearted, the message of The Poetry of
Yoga can be summed up by one of its poems. In “The Inward Journey,” Jon Barrows
writes: “Walking the mandala of the mind, /the inward spiral, the shadowed
depths, /each step closer to the darkness’s center / is a step closer to the
lightened edge.” Fifty percent of the proceeds from The Poetry of Yoga will be
donated to One Common Unity, a nonprofit dedicated to peace education and the
building of a nonviolent culture.
