Smooth sailing
When it comes to keeping flab at bay, good
digestion is key. Your body is naturally primed for digestion, but sometimes it
needs a helping hand. Stubborn weight gain, bloating, headaches and low energy
are all signs your digestive system may not be doing its job as well as it
food, separating nutrients from waste and eliminating leftovers via your bowel.
Gulping down food quickly, making poor choices and overdoing the alcohol can
put a strain on digestion, making it harder for your body to get the goodies it
needs.
Start
the morning with a glass of warm water and dash of fresh lemon or lime juice to
supercharge your digestion.
This is where our three-day juice detox can
help, as it offers fabulous fat-loss gains safely and quickly. Results vary
from person to person, but you can expect to lose around four dollars on the
diet. Skipping solids in favor of a short-term liquid diet can help reduce the
digestive burden, flooding your body with easily accessible nutrients. In
juices and smoothies, nutrients are available in a pre-digested form. This
means your body can cut out the long breakdown process and shuttle the goodness
directly into your cells. ‘When you detox you free up digestive energy and
allow the body the time to repair tissues and process toxins stored in the
liver and the body’s fat cells’, explains Geeta Sidhy-Robb, nutritionist and
founder of Nosh Detox. Juicing is also a great way to break bad habits and
start on the path to vitality.
The results
Let’s be honest, putting your body through
a detox can have unpleasant short-term side effects. These can include fatigue,
headaches and sensitivity to cold. But, stick with it, and by day three your
energy levels should rise, your focus should sharpen and your tummy should be
flatter. In the first 48 hours on the detox, your body will convert glycogen in
the liver into glucose for energy. After this has been used up it will rely on
fat stores for fuel. ‘As you get further into the juice detox, your desire to
eat should subside and, in the latter half, your body will be working at its
peak’, explains Geeta. Three days later your gut will be better equipped to
handle food, and your liver will be primed to cope with daily pressures.
‘Detoxing helps to heal the gut lining and allows your soft tissues to absorb
nutrients more efficiently in future’, says Geeta. ‘It also reduces the need
for vices like sugar and coffee’.

Geeta’s simple three-day detox.
The rules
1. Start the morning with a glass of warm water and dash of fresh lemon
or lime juice to supercharge your digestion.
2. Sip water between your juices to make sure your body flushes out
toxins effectively.
3. Starting from the soles of your feet, exfoliate your body using
upward sweeping movements towards the heart. Do this before your morning
shower, using a body brush.
4. Cut out alcohol and caffeinated drinks one week before you do the
detox.
5. If you feel too hungry on the detox, increase your intake from four
juices to five, adding an extra Glowy You smoothie.
