So much for feeling frazzled at work.
Boredom is now more common in the workplace than stress, says a recent study,
and stems from the fact that we now expect to feel constantly fulfilled. Add a
bit of excitement to a yawn-worthy day with these tricks:
1.
Set yourself a time limit. See how much you can
get done in 30 minutes. Repeat, trying to beat your first efforts. The time
will whizz by and you’ll probably accomplish more in one hour than you would
have done all afternoon.
2.
Bookend the boring. If you know you have to get
a spreadsheet finished by 3pm, schedule a task you like doing (or a quick
water-cooler visit) for 3:05 so you have something to look forward to.
3.
Open up. Take more interest in what your
colleagues are doing, personally and professionally. It will add some variety
to your day, and could lead to new opportunities.
Fast fact
35 is the age you hit your ‘style prime’,
when you understand what works for you and what doesn’t, says fashion brand CC.
So, no excuse for that velour tracksuit at 36!
Bright idea
In the shower, gently tug your hair at the
roots and massage shampoo into your scalp in small circles to promote blood
flow, reduce tension and start the day in a relaxed state of mind.
Show me the money
Think a fat-cat salary is the key to
happiness? When it comes to the relationship between our wages and bliss
levels, the sky isn’t the limit. A number of American studies have shown that
quality of life peaks between $48 and $72 a year – after that, your work
responsibilities increase, but your happiness doesn’t.
If you only do… read a good book
Losing yourself in a book is more than just
an expression. An enjoyable read can actually influence your thoughts and
actions for the better, says a new study from Ohio State University.
Researchers discovered that people tend to mimic the behaviour of a book’s
proactive or sympathetic characters. You are what you read!
