Perfectly arranged ‘candid’ shots of the happy couple gazing into each other’s eyes, a cake that would look out of place at a Kardashian wedding…This is the stuff we’re told ‘dream weddings’ are made of. But behind the glossy photos can lurk all kinds of trauma. Here, wedding insiders reveal the moments both bride and groom would rather forget…

When Mumzillas attack…

“Forget Bridezillas- it’s their mums who can be the trickiest. I saw one greet her daughter on her wedding day with the words, ‘Your shoes are hideous’. She went on to say she didn’t like her hair or makeup, and when the tearful bride went to compose herself, Mumzilla turned on me and demanded I use her crusty old makeup. “In-between rants, she demanded cups of tea and food, like she was an A-list celeb. When the photographer arrived, a guy called ‘Dammo’, she refused to let him take pictures, saying he didn’t have a real name. I still have, ‘It sounds like “Damn you!”’ ringing in my ears! “The poor bride was so mortified she locked herself in the bathroom until we finally managed to coax her out. She then spent the rest of her wedding day trying to keep her mum from upsetting anyone else.” Liesl Van Kervel, head beauty therapist, Karinejackson.co.uk.

Groom Mia

“I organized a wedding for one couple, and it was all going to plan until the bride pulled up outside the church to find her groom had gone AWOL. She started to worry that her fiancé had left her at the altar, but the vicar said he’d gone to get some air to calm his nerves.

”Seconds later, the vicar pointed to the side of the vicar pointed to the side of the church where the groom had loomed into view. He was looking rather shifty and zipping up his flies-followed by an equally shifty-looking mother of the bride, pulling down the hemline of her outfit, much to the horror of the bride and the vicar. The wedding was cancelled, and the girl and her mum still aren’t speaking.”

The parent trap

“Weddings seem to make people do things they wouldn’t normally dream of. One I organized was memorably elegant… or so it seemed. In the lift to the reception, I witnessed the bride’s divorced parents getting amorous after too many glasses of bubbly. It would have been sweet had they not both been there with their new spouses. The bride clocked what was happening, so she and I spent the evening trying to divert their partners from the shenanigans that were going on!”

Vintage vom

“One lady I worked with was absolutely giddy about the vintage dress her mum had worn for her own wedding and handed down to her. She did worry that she’d spend the day fretting about getting it dirty. But before the wedding breakfast I saw her necking a red sambuca shot and, an hour later, she’d gone missing. I eventually found her in the bathroom, head over the toilet bowl, her precious dress covered in bright red vomit.

“She then spent most of the wedding reception in the toilets with me trying to wash away the stains. The groom was horrified and refused to take her to the hotel, so I and a bridesmaid had to escort her to the bridal suite. Not quite the dream day she’d envisaged…”
