To help your children to be independent when
they’re little, the following tips will help you at some level, understand
children and have suitable educations for them through stages.
It’s
not so difficult to help children to be independent.
Separation and independence
Newborns often need the mother in most of
their time, so you have to do everything for them, all the things are in your
ways and under your control. But, when children grow, their physical, spiritual
and emotional abilities are developed. They will want to practice or mimic your
actions to do it themselves. That also mean your children are getting
independent day by day.
In their 6-7 months old, children start to
realize that they are apart from their mothers, and all you should do is to let
them develop the abilities naturally. The stage can last till they’re 2 years
old but, you needn’t be so worried about it because it’s natural to children’s
maturation.
As children get older, they will be braver
in walking and having their own characters, which is the time you need to pay
more attention to them. That’s because the years before they go to schools,
their independence can become selfishness and cause some character issues, such
as they want to control everything.
Let
children handle things that they are able to.
Stages in which children assert themselves
From
25 to 30 months old
In the period, your children will keep on
asserting themselves in every major. They will do many things that beyond you
permissions and break your rules more often; they keep painting on the wall
even when you tell them not to. “I do what I want” is children’s most favorite
quotes in this stage.
From
31 to 36 months old
This is the time children get ready to go
to school. This stage may make you worried but, it happens to every child. All
you need to do is draw a line to them in everything because this stage is
important; after that, children will go to the kindergarten and contact to more
people than they used to.
The role of you in children’s independence development
Your children need teachings, advice of
you before they go exploring the world by themselves. You should give them love
and supports so that they can be on their own path with self-esteem.
Children also need freedom so that they can
explore the things around. Therefore, you’d better create a safe zone in your
house instead of run after them and tell them what they’re not allowed to do.
And,
teach them to do personal things.
You can encourage children’s independence
by give them choices and let them know things that they can do on their own.
You can let them choose clothes, snacks or afternoon activities, which will
make children more aware of independence.
Teaching them to be independence doesn’t
mean you should give them less love. Children always crave for your cares. Give
them compliments when they can do something on their own and never push them
away when they need your supports. They will always want and need your comforts
for a long time after that.
You should know that the older they get,
the more things they want to do without your helps, which means you shouldn’t
indulge your children. Teaching them to do things independently when they were
little is that you provide children solid foundations for their future.
