Circuit pays homeage to the Mahatma by taking you around the places he lived in
and travelled to. Whether it’s Gandhi’s birthplace Porbandar, or his ashram
near the Sabarmati River, the four-day Gandhi circuit covers it all.

This circuit covers 22 places over 372km in
the state, including Ahmedabad, Porbandar, Dandi, Rajkot and Surat. Here’s a
round-up of the most popular places on this route and why they appeal to
history and culture aficionados.
1. Gandi’s Birthplace , Porbandar

Gujarati Jain family.

residence is locates in the old walled quarters of the town and is open to
visitors. The tour takes you around the Magatma’s old haveli and Kirti Mandir,
a memorial temple built in his honour with an adjoining museum, picture
gallery and library, all depicting glimpses of his life. The temple has
life-size oil painting of Gandhi and his wife Kasturba along with his
preachings placed at their feet. The tour also includes an evening meditation
at Porbandar along with dinner and night halt.
2. The Gandhi Ashram, Ahmedabad
On
Day 2 of the Grandeur of Gandhi Circuit, you will be taken to this ashram.
In 1917, on a quiet stretch of the
Sabarmati River, just 7km from Ahmedabad, Mahatma Gandhi set up the Sabarmati
Ashram, now commonly known as The Gandhi Ashram. Sabarmati Ashram was his first
Satyagraha Ashram and for many, it was the nerve centre of India’s freedom
movement. Many national and international leaders visited Gandhi at this
ashram, and it was whilst living here that he was given the moniker of Mahatma
Gandhi. On Day 2 of the Grandeur of Gandhi Circuit, you will be taken to this
ashram. Hridaya Kunj, the cottage where he lived, is preserved as it was in the
Mahatma’s lifetime. Sabarmati Ashram also has a memorial centre, library and a
sound and light spectacle for visitors.
3. Mk Gandhi Vidyalaya, Rajkot
Formerly
known as Alfred High School, this is where Mahatma Gandhi did his chooling
before going to London.

1853, the school was the region’s first English-medium school. The famous
incident of Gandhi refusing to copy the word ‘kettle’ in spite of repeated
prompting by his schoolteacher took place here. The tour takes you around the
school and show you other attractions in the city of Rajkot.

took place from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandhi. Once there, Gandhi and his followers
produced salt and addressed meetings against the British regime. This movement
has great historical importance as it brought worldwide attention to the Indian
struggle for independence. On Day 4 of the tour, you will be taken to Dandhi in
the early morning before Vadodara and back to Ahmedebad.
